Best Parks on the Westside

Bluff Creek Park, 12604 Bluff Creek Drive, Playa Vista
There are 29 parks in Playa Vista, giving you plenty of opportunities to have a picnic, kick the soccer ball, or simply enjoy the green space within a few minutes of 11724 Culver. Ballona Discovery Park is a serene spot that also offers a great way to learn more about the Ballona Wetlands, and The Lawn is a neighborhood park with playground equipment and a large, grassy area. We are partial to the dog parks, however, especially the off-leash Bluff Creek Dog Park, where there are separate play yards for big and small dogs, plus grassy hills, a bubbling water feature, and shaded seating.

Veterans Memorial Park, 4117 Overland Ave., Culver City
This urban park offers facilities for soccer soccer fields, softball diamonds, and basketball and tennis courts, as well as a kids’ playground with swings and picnic tables. Right next door is the Culver City Municipal Plunge, a 40,000-square-foot facility with a heated, Olympic-size pool for recreational swimming, lessons, exercise, and lap swimming.

Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, 4100 South La Cienega Blvd., Baldwin Hills
This impressive park just minutes from 11724 Culver has tons of amenities, including a lotus pond, fishing lake, and sand volleyball court, plus views from the ocean to downtown L.A. to the South Bay to the San Gabriel Mountains. “One of the most actively used features is the park’s variety of footpaths and trails,” said the California Department of Parks and Recreation. “The Burke Roche Trail and the Rim Trail are the most recent trails created. More than 7 miles of existing trails include the Burke Roche trail which is 2.2 miles, the Bowl Loop at 0.8 miles, the Ridge trail at 2.6 miles, the Waterfall Trail at one mile and the Ballfield Walking Path at one half-mile.”

Culver City Park, 9910 Jefferson Blvd., Culver City
This hilltop park has almost every conceivable amenity, including playground equipment, a skate park, fitness stairs, a dog park, and a kids’ dream: “a sand and water area with a working water pump and water wheels where they can build dams and construct sand castles that would make Frank Gehry proud,” said Red Tricycle. “Once everyone has had their fill of the outdoors, cross the street to the Star Eco Station and take a quick tour of their exotic rescued wildlife center.”

South Beach Park, on the Venice border at 3400 Barnard Way
“Avast there off the port bow! Looks like a ship has run ashore on the Santa Monica beach boardwalk directly across from the water and turned itself into a playground fit for all sorts of aquatic adventurers,” said Red Tricycle. “With climbing ropes, swings, a roller slide, and sandpit with water pump, your curious captains will have a blast pretending they are ocean explorers adrift at sea. A soft rubber padded play area covers the entire park’s floor making parents breathe out a sigh of relief while they breathe in that crisp ocean air.”

Burton W Chase Park, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey
The site of many of the city’s special events throughout the year, including the Summer Concert Series, Burton Chace Park is considered “the crown jewel of the Marina,” said Los Angeles Magazine. The park also offers “a multipurpose room, picnic shelters and excellent harbor views.”

Palisades Park, Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica
This idyllic spot isn’t just for tourists and film companies. “Palm and eucalyptus-lined paths” provide a feeling of serenity, which is only enhanced by the views spanning the ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains. It’s not a kids’ play zone, but a stroll along the park from the pier to San Vicente will clear the mind, and allow you to get in some good steps.

Best Bike Paths on the Westside

Culver Boulevard Median Trail, Culver City
This bike path couldn’t be any more convenient for owners at 11724 Culver unless it went right through their living rooms. Located just outside the community in the landscaped median, the trail “was built on a former Pacific Electric interurban line—commonly known as the Red Cars after the trolley system’s signature livery color—that once connected Culver City to Redondo Beach via Playa del Rey, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach,” said TrailLink. Today, it travels 1.9 miles down Culver Blvd. to Del Rey, where it’s a quick hop over to the Ballona Creek Bike Path.

The Ballona Creek Bike Path, Culver City
This popular path starts at Syd Kronenthal Park in east Culver City and goes for seven miles, connecting to the Coast Bike Path in Marina del Rey. It can be accessed from several additional points along the way, including “Dusquesne Avenue, Overland Avenue, Ocean Drive, Sepulveda Boulevard, Sawtelle Avenue, Slauson Avenue, Inglewood Boulevard, Centinela Avenue, McConnell Avenue, Lincoln Boulevard, Fisherman’s Village in Marina Del Rey, and Pacific Avenue,” said the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Marvin Braude Bike Trail, Pacific Palisades to Palos Verdes
“This beloved 22-mile bicycle path traces nearly the entire extent of L.A.’s westward-facing coastline,” said Timeout. “The path starts at Will Rogers State Beach, passes drool-worthy real estate in Santa Monica, Venice and Manhattan Beach and winds its way all the way down to Torrance County Beach—you probably know its South Bay expanse better as ‘the Strand.’”
