Kahanamoku Klassic

2024-03-21T17:21:20+00:00

If you’ve never witnessed the sport of competitive canoeing, it’s time to get your feet wet! Or keep them dry on the sand—it’s your choice. Either way, the Kahanamoku Klassic Outrigger Canoe Race is the place to be on Saturday, June 1 at Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey. Competitive paddling is a growing sport, and this event regularly draws thousands of onlookers. The full Open Race, for advanced canoers, is 11 miles long and starts at 8am. But don’t let the early start time scare you—there are several more races throughout the day, including courses for novices, women, and men, This event also includes food for purchase, vendors selling everything from paddling equipment to art, jewelry, and clothing, and a raffle and silent auction. It wraps up with a ceremony at 2:30 pm, where more than 650 awards for first, second, and third-place winners in all categories will be handed out.

Grunions Are Running On The Westside

2024-03-21T17:21:20+00:00

They may not be the prettiest of fish but they sure are cool. They leave the water at night to spawn during the spring and summer months, and while they love the L.A. Harbor, they can also be spotted on nearby Westside beaches. Peak grunion traffic normally occurs on the second and third nights of each four-day run, with the second hour typically better than the first. The upcoming schedule is below, based on predictions for Cabrillo Beach, and more info can be found for the remaining season at these sites:
